Hello my name is Henry Uihlein, and I would like to introduce you to the: Montauk Mercury Grand Slam Fishing Tournament, the only tournament of its kind in the United States.

This is a two-day tournament and requires you to catch four different species in order to win the grand slam. The species are Fluke, Sea Bass, Blue Fish and Striped Bass. Since Montauk is the fishing capital of the world, this isn’t all that difficult. Points per pound are given to each species. Striped Bass is one point per pound, Blue Fish is three points, Fluke is five points and Sea Bass is 10 points per pound.

The tournament is held every year on the weekend before Labor Day. This year’s tournament is August 20 and August 21, 2011; all boats must leave from Montauk Harbor and return to Montauk Harbor.

There are three divisions: charter boat, party boat and recreational. Each division is separate and competes only against boats in the same division. The recreational division is the only division that can win the grand prize — a 225hp Mercury Optimax Outboard. All children 13 and younger receive the Cablevision Youth Angles Plaque for catching one of any species of legal size, and are entered into a drawing to win a seven-foot inflatable boat with a 4hp Mercury Outboard. An awards ceremony with live music and refreshments is held under a large tent Sunday evening after all the boats are in. Also at that time, we honor the Montauk Fishing Legend of the Year, someone who has made their living solely by fishing.

This event is organized and run by two service organizations, the East Hampton Kiwanis and Montauk Friends of Erin. Both are well respected in our community and provide for such things as Toys for Tots, Meals on Wheels, pediatric trauma, youth services, scholarships, sports programs and the annual Santa Parade in East Hampton and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Montauk.

Those sponsors who contribute $1,750 will receive:

Display space — a booth to show products during the weekend of the tournament, i.e. one boat or one vehicle, etc.;

Company name and logo on all promotional material and

one complementary entry in the tournament.

Those sponsors who contribute $3,500 or more will receive:

Display space — a booth to show products during the weekend of the tournament, i.e. two boats or two vehicles, etc.;

Company name and logo on all promotional material;

Two complementary entries in the tournament and

Two complementary tickets to either the Annual East Hampton Kiwanis Winter Dinner Dance at Gurney’s Inn in January or the Montauk Friends of Erin St. Patrick’s Day Cocktail Party at Gurney’s Inn in March — each comes with a Saturday night stay at Gurney’s Inn.
